Let Them Eat Cake...

Or not.

On Roy's birthday, I had a brilliant idea.
I can have them.
They're rare....but I do have brilliant ideas.
I decided to make Roy a birthday cake without the help of BettyCrocker or DuncanHines!!!
I used to do it all the time for the girls.
My mother gave me a book when I got married the first time, "Cooking for Two". It was printed up in 1974 from the USDAPeople. It's been very helpful to me over the years and I thought for a small cake for the 2 of us, it would be perfect!!
I got up a couple of hours before he did to surprise him. I wanted him to sleep in so I didn't get out the mixer. I would mix it by hand.
I had to tweak the recipe a bit. It's a yellow cake recipe, and I wanted chocolate.
And it wanted fat...I used a mixture of butter and mayo.
That batter tasted so good!!
It smelled fabulous bakin'!!

I made the icin' from leftover cream cheese, white chocolate chips, a splash of Hazelnut liqueur and powder sugar!!!
That icin' was so delish!!!!

I was so proud!!!!
Roy was skeptical...he raised an eyebrow.
"You? Baked? A cake? From scratch? Without the mixer? And you made icin'?"

I just nodded yes...with a sillyass grin plastered on my face.
I was so proud!!!!

He took 2 bites, put his fork down and grinned at me.
"The icin' takes over, doesn't it."
Thank God!!!!!!!!
That was The Driest Cake Ever!!!!
I apologized.
It was his birthday cake for Pete's sake!!!
I felt awful.
I was thinkin' of what I could do to make was like eatin' chocolate sand!!!!
I shoulda added more milk!!!
Damn it!!
"We could get some ice cream to eat with it." I told him.
He was very quick, to say, "Why would you fuck up perfectly good ice cream like that?"
But you know he ate every piece of that GodAwful thing.
I baked him another one just a bit ago....and added the milk.
Much Better!!! Much Much Better!!!

I grew up with corningware too, only not that pattern.

I give you an A for effort. Hubby's birthday was yesterday and we're having family around during the weekend. Still trying to decide if I should bake or buy a cake.

I couldn't have been too bad if he ate the whole thing.
Happy Birthday, Roy!

That man is definitely a keeper, if he ate all that!!LOL Sorry it turned out so bad.. glad the next one didn't.. That's what all that fat was for!! Cakes from scratch aren't that hard.. if you have a good recipe! Good work!

He's a sweetheart.

SOmeday I'll tell you about the time I made a bday cake for my dad using apple juice instead of sugar (he was diabetic). It was bricklike, to say the least...

I thought icing was what a cake is all about. It'll be better next time. On another subject, did I say something wrong? I noticed you weren't on my followers list anymore.

The cake is just delivery for the icing! You get an A+ from me!

Ha!! My family STILL teases me about the Whiz Marble Cake I tried to make when I was 8. You know, salt & sugar looks a LOT alike... We threw it in the chicken pen and they wouldn't (or couldn't) even eat it.

I firmly believe that using the box counts as "scratch." You still have to put stuff with it...

Hate it when my cooking goes awry--which is a lot of the time.
